Happy holidays, everyone! Wait, what? You’re tired? Stressed? REALLY stressed? You’re not sleeping well? Forgetting to eat properly? Drinking too much? Oh yes. Yes yes yes, it’s that time of year again and you’ve forgotten to do the most important thing – Take care of yourself. It’s okay, really. Let me tell you a few things that might make you feel better, at least for a moment, and might make this last week of the holiday season a bit easier.
Listen, the holiday season is prime time for forgetting self-care. We’re so so stressed out. There never seems to be enough time to do everything. The kids have gone feral, everyone is in a bad mood, and Amazon is late with the big present of the year. I understand. But there are a few things we can do to help ourselves in this, which always ends up being pretty much anything but the most wonderful time of the year.
The first thing to remember is that it’ll all work out. Dinner will get on the table. Santa will come. Maybe the old fat man will have a couple presents brought late by some industrious elves, but the big day will come and go just like it does every year. We don’t have to end up in the psych unit to get it all done perfectly. And I know you all want it to be perfect, and that’s totally understandable. But if it doesn’t, that’s okay too. We’re not perfect people. Breathe.
Breathe, and take five seconds for yourself. Have a glass of water instead of that fourth cup of coffee. You’re probably dehydrated. And take a step back. Going full tilt 24 hours a day is the perfect way to forget something or do it incorrectly and then you’ll just end up blaming yourself later. It’s okay if you’re a little disorganized, or all the Christmas cards aren’t perfectly set up on the mantle, or you forgot to put the candles in the window. It’s okay. Breathe.
You’re doing your very best, and that’s all that matters. And on that note, if you’re screaming internally “Screw it!!!” at this point, guess what? That’s fine too. The Christmas police aren’t coming to your house if you’ve all but given up at this point. It’s absolutely allowed to throw your hands up and say “To hell with it, this particular thing just isn’t getting done today.” No one is going to judge you. It’s fine. Drink another glass of water. Make a phone call to a friend who is just as stressed as you are and commiserate. See? They’re just as stressed out. You’re not alone. Everything is going to be okay. Breathe.
The day will come on Monday, and it will go, and the kids will be fed and showered with gifts, even if you weren’t able to get absolutely everything on their list. They don’t know that you had your own list, and if your list isn’t finished, there’s no way they’ll know. It’s fine. This is supposed to be a happy time, and as we all know, if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. Take care of yourself. You’re allowed. You’re entitled to it. You deserve it.
