I don’t know about you, but I am a huge sucker for a subscription box. And in the name of science, I tried three different subscription boxes, with vastly varying results. I bring you those results here, and yes, there was a decisive winner in the bunch. Whether you have a subscription to one of these services or are thinking of signing up for one, I hope my little experiment will help you in finding the box for you. Let’s dig in.
Dia.com states the following: “I’ve always loved fashion, but struggled to find clothes that fit my body and worked with my personal style. I’ve been everything from a size 12 to a size 22 and I couldn’t help but notice, no matter my size, that there was nothing for me.
Oh boy. Stitch Fix was a total miss with me. I reached out on Facebook and found that a lot of friends had used it, and it was split about 50/50 between people who hated it and people who loved it. I was urged to give them a second chance after stating in no uncertain terms that the pieces they sent me didn’t fit my style at all, and I had high hopes after carefully spelling out what I was looking for. That’s a really great thing about Stitch Fix, they give you oodles of opportunities to write to your stylist, and that was a big plus for me. However when my second box arrived, it was more of the same clothing that I had received the first time around and I cancelled immediately. I wasn’t mad about it, but I was disappointed. I suppose you don’t really have any control over who your stylist is, but I felt that I had given them every opportunity to show me the range of clothing they had, and they just didn’t in the end. Perhaps over a course of many months things would have improved, but I don’t have the time, patience or money to do that. Which brings me to…
What on earth is Wantable? Well for this reviewer, it was the gold at the end of the rainbow. I was absolutely ready to give up on subscription boxes altogether, but a friend mentioned Wantable, and how even though it wasn’t as well known as other box services, they could be a good fit for me. And boy, was she ever right. The styling questions they ask were more specific, and I had a good feeling about it as I was filling out my style profile. When the box came, I was thrilled. I received seven items, of which I kept three. I would have kept more, but the jeans were a little off with the sizing (unlike Stitch Fix, you do not have the option to exchange for a different size free of charge, which is a bummer) and one of the shirts was khaki, which I never wear. Those were my only complaints, and frankly, the blouse, logo t-shirt, and gorgeous moto jacket that I kept had stars in my eyes. So much so that I didn’t mind that a few of the pieces weren’t quite right. Why? Because they had nailed my style. My stylist and I were absolutely on the same page, and I cannot wait for my next box.
So what does all this mean, other than I finally found what was right for me, but might not be right for everyone else? It comes down to trial and error for each person. You might try and adore Stitch Fix or Dia&Co or any other subscription services out there, but the most important thing regardless of which one you pick is being very concrete and specific with your stylist. If you’re paying your $20 a month and not keeping anything, you are just wasting money, and no one wants that. There are so many options out there, and I hope you find the subscription box that is perfect for you.
