Let’s talk about guilty pleasures. For example, I sit here writing this wrapped in a robe, a pint of Haagen Dazs by my side, watching The Bachelor. I am, after a long day at work that started at 5 AM, indulging in my guilty pleasures. And I will bite anyone who disrupts this little scene. Just as a warning.
Guilty pleasures can come in many forms, of course, from a quiet cup of coffee before the melee of the morning begins, to a favorite playlist on the way to work, to a bath at the end of the day. No matter what form it may take, guilty pleasures are the things that preserve our sanity in this chaotic world, and it is up to us to take advantage of those little things that prevent us from things like road rage, locking ourselves in the pantry when the kids are screaming, and telling our boss exactly where he can shove his opinions.
And we should never feel guilty about those pleasures, either. Somewhere along the way of adulthood, we were made to feel like we shouldn’t enjoy ourselves. And that, frankly, is ridiculous. If we don’t have our little pleasures, we will burn out entirely, and be completely useless in our responsibilities. And seriously, who wants to be around someone who doesn’t have a little fun every day? No one, that’s who. I know that I become a much more pleasant person when I have a little time to myself, even if that time is before the dang sun rises, I WILL have that little time. And so should you. You deserve it.
I can hear it now. “But but but but…” No buts! There is nothing preventing you from turning on *your* music on the way to school. Or forgoing the organic free range gluten free whatever as a snack and eating some dang Cheetos. Or using that body scrub that smells like sugar cookies. Sing in the car! If you’re singing in the car you can’t scream at the idiot that just took up two parking spots. We live in stressful times, everyone! Self care is paramount in stressful times, and because I feel so strongly about this, I’ll tell you a little something that someone told me when I was feeling guilty about taking time for myself.
You can’t take care of anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself first. What do they always tell you on airplanes? In the case of an emergency, put your own oxygen mask on first before helping the person next to you.
So the next time you’re feeling guilty about that extra cookie, or that massage, or that you listened to your playlist in the car instead of The Wheels On The Bus for the sixty thousandth time? Remember that if you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll be in no position to help anyone else. Guilty pleasures are nothing to feel guilty about. Take care of yourself. Put your mask on first. Especially if it’s a deep cleaning mud masque, because those make your skin super fabulous. Take it from your old pal Danielle. But don’t touch my ice cream. I bite.
